Story behind the Ratings...
Or Why We Chose Gargoyles

"What's in the box?" Cyn asked as I struggled into the reading room at the main office of In the Library Reviews.
"A gargoyle."
"Another one?"
"What do you mean another one?"
She gestured widely around the room. "There are almost as many gargoyles in here as there are books."
Placing the newest acquisition on a shelf, I slowly glanced around the room. Cyn had a point, granted books were everywhere, but gargoyles were crowding the tomes. Something needed to be done, something that didn't involve getting rid of books or gargoyles.
"Why don't you put some of them to work?" Lisa asked, as she entered the room, carrying an armful of books.
"Put them to work. That's a great idea!" I exclaimed. "Cyn and I were talking about implementing a rating system. Instead of stars or roses, we'll have gargoyles."
"And instead of using 5 as our highest rating, we'll use the number 9," Cyn broke in. "It's different and it is related to Celtic beliefs and history, something we study. In addition, it's a balanced number, five is the midpoint and there are four points below it and above it."
We both looked at Lisa.
"Sounds great. So who's going to write up the guideline?"
"Cyn," I volunteered quickly.
She rolled her eyes. "Fine, I'll do it."
A few hours later she presented me with the rating guide and that brings us here....
