I wish this book had been published when I went to school! Cathy Travis is to be commended for making the Constitution comprehensible for young people. This slim, hardcover book arranges the material in an easily accessible format. The addition of interesting facts, famous quotes and a glossary causes these pages to come alive with history and contemporary significance. Students, (as well as their parents!) will learn a lot more about this priceless document.
Constitution, in its original language, is presented on one side of the page, while a modern translation, interpreting the key terms and ideas, shares the second column. Readers can quickly compare the two versions, thereby increasing their understanding of the important points the Founding Fathers addressed. The author took great care in rendering the original words into contemporary thoughts, assuring of the accuracy of the translation.
A separate section discussing the Amendments and their significance in today's society is included. Also noteworthy is a list of proposed amendments showing both the positive and potentially negative aspects of each. Questions are offered to stimulate thinking and to encourage readers to choose sides on the issues. A quick description of the Electoral College succinctly explains the process of electing a president.
All of this valuable information lies snugly within the covers of this book and takes up only about 100 pages Cathy Travis has compressed the essence of the Constitution into a thoroughly enjoyable and factually accurate resource. It's my hope that this book will be used whenever and wherever the Constitution is discussed!
