Cai was antsy, even with being in the Bachelor Officer's Quarters, waiting to find out more. With the her nanoprobes, she checked on what was happening to Jake and his unit. Though it was a routine mission of sorts, she felt off somehow. Though she wanted to know more about her missing parents, she had to concentrate on the mission at hand first. The trouble came and she had to find a way to get to Jake and company and warn them of what was to come. Could they get out alive? Could Cai manipulate the nanoprobes to allow herself to help her friends?
The Voice of Freedom was out and about, talking on how all people had the right to be free. Cai awoke to this voice speaking about freedom and the right to be free from terrorism and more. She rubbed her head and tried to recall what had happened. But there were now gaps in her memory and doing by hand what had been easy to do was taking time and more. As she tries to find out about Jake and his team, she finally reaches him through their link. Though Jake doesn't realize she's human, she's always glad to be there with him in any way.
She needs his help in order to find out what happened to her parents and deal with a woman named Bonzai Maguire. Cai hopes that somehow she can get Jake to accept that she's human and perhaps he'd help her get some answers about her parents, her burnout, and the other anchor she felt while helping Jake.
When Jake meets her in person, he's pissed to find out she's human, not a computer, and more than that that she was a child when she was brought into the program. Then comes the mission, the one she helped the Special Forces find out information on. She needs to go with them, but little does she know the true extent on why they want her with the Special Forces team.
They're chosen for a mission to Raft Cities and the danger there is immense, yet it could be the only way of finding out what happened to Cai's parents as well as learning more about this Shadow Voice. But can Cai and Jake manage to keep control of their feelings and more? What about the fact that someone within the organization they work for wants them dead?
This story blew me away with its depth and making the future feel so normal. I felt and sympathized with both Cai and Jake. Further, Patti O'Shea has managed to create a world that can be if we're not careful about giving away our rights as humans. This isn't just a love story, but a story about justice, human rights, and what happens when we go too overboard. The story of Cai and Jake is simply erotic and amazing in it's own right. What they share is something beyond the norm and not just because of the link between them but in spite of that link. They bond on a level not often seen by people. Her relationship with the others of the team is that of big brothers protecting their baby sister and in this case it's apropos. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Power of Two and am finding myself wanting to search out the other books of the series to see what's come before.
