Under the Jolly Roger is better than a bunch of gold doubloons! Packed with action, adventure and a hearty dose of humor, this book will have readers riding the high seas with one extraordinary female. Jacky Faber is a wonderful combination of swashbuckling pirate and reluctant lady. As she commands a ship filled with seasoned sailors, she not only fights against England's enemy, but also with the stirrings of womanhood deep within her heart.
Mary "Jacky" Faber, heroine in the two previous books in this series, is now 15 and is on the run again. After leaving the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston, she sets out to be reunited with her beloved, Jaimy Fletcher, in her homeland of England. Yet, her attraction for action waylays her, causing her to be press ganged on to a ship with a lecherous and corrupt captain. A series of surprises puts her at the helm of this vessel where she leads her crew with unflinching bravery, boldness and a genuine touch of love.
Set in the turbulent waters of the 19th century, this story captures the danger and politics of this period. Young readers will get an understanding of England's wartime woes, through the adolescent adventures of Jacky Faber. History is smoothly incorporated into the tale, giving it a rich taste of reality. The events are shown through Jacky's perspective, allowing a wonderful glimpse into her thoughts and desires, which are often as unsettled as the waves she rides
There is a strong sense of passionate zeal within these pages, as the characters maneuver the rough seas in search of fame and fortune. A classy touch of romance graces this tale, showing the softer side of Jacky. When the book finally closes, readers will be ready to follow this young woman into her next adventure. I know I'll be there!
