A Dog Called Leka gets two paws up! Willard Manus gives readers a novel rich in adventure and brimming with that priceless communication between a dog and his owner.

Eighteen-year-old Ben Edgeworth lost both of his parents to the angry seas, but decided to keep their dream of sailing alive. He built a catamaran, but before setting sail, found himself firmly attached to a stray dog. As Ben and Leka ride the waves and the worries of the Aegean Sea, each mile traveled molds their lives together in perfect symmetry.

Excellent writing, as well as the author's expert knowledge of the Greek islands gives this story an authentic flavor. Ben and Leka's sailing adventure is beautifully described with an air of genuine affection and appreciation. The magnificence of the Aegean Sea is superbly contrasted with its might and unpredictability. Readers will understand the dangers and the delights of this wonder-filled waterway.

Yet, it's Leka who steals hearts and stands out in these pages. From a pitiful stray to a valuable companion, his transition is truly heartwarming. As Leka encounters dangers, he shows himself to be intelligent and daring. Readers will feel the excitement, shudder at the perils, and hope for the best in each situation.

Interestingly, this novel was dedicated to the author's grandsons. To me, that serves to highlight the universal and timeless quality of this story. Companionable characters, a well paced plot and a strong emotional appeal makes these pages memorable. Setting sail on the Aegean Sea with Ben and Leka is a treat that shouldn't be missed.
