When I first got heavy into reading, all I read were horror novels. I devoured books by King, Koontz, and Saul. And then my tastes changed. I got sucked into thrillers, and crime novels. Only recently have I come back to horror novels. And though, King and Koontz, and Saul are still prominent (all right, dominate) in the field, I am expanding my library to include a new generation of horror novelists. And, gladly, I am adding Michael Laimo.
Dr. Michael Cayle is sick and tired of practicing medicine in the big city. It's no place to raise a family. After all he has his wife, Christine and their six-year-old daughter, Jessica, to think about. So when an amazing opportunity to open a solo practice in the peaceful, secluded New England town of Ashborough, he jumps at the opportunity.
Like a photograph, the family arrives to their new home. The doctor who once cared for those in Ashborough recently died. The town was thrilled to have a new doctor around. The closest hospital was far enough away that Cayle would become something of a savior. Living in the old doctor's home, Cayle appreciates the woods that line the back of his property-Ashborough is nothing like living in the city.
It isn't long before Cayle realizes that things in his Ashborough are not at all what they seem. Late at night, from the brim of the woods, glowing amber colored eyes watch him, his house, his family. Something lives in the woods. Something sinister and dangerous. Worse-something smart, cunning and manipulative.
A helpful neighbor explains as simply as possible to Cayle the way it is in Ashborough. When they come for you, don't fight them. What they ask of you, oblige. And what ever you do, don't talk about them to anyone - not even your wife. Because if you do, if you mention them, they will punish you by killing your family.
Slowly Cayle understands the reality of his situation, he is trapped in a town full of people afraid to stand up to the creatures that surround them. There is no escape. Any one who has ever tried to leave has been stopped. And punished.
When Christine announces she is pregnant, Cayle knows he must find a way out of Ashborough-or else die trying.
Deep In The Darkness is the first book I have read by Laimo. And I'm impressed. People often ask me, when you read a horror novel-does it scare you the way a scary movie does. I don't know why they ask. They never believe my answer. Yes. In fact a well-written horror novel is ten times scarier than a horror movie. It's all about the writer's ability to instill his image of terror into your imagination. And Deep In The Darkness is exactly that type of horror novel … I'll have nightmares for months. I just know it!
