With a strong emotional appeal and a good dose of creativity, The Healer's Heart transplants the passion of historic Christianity into contemporary culture. As readers follow the life of main character, Dr. Luke Tayspill, there is an apparent resemblance to another Luke, known to Christians as the beloved physician of the New Testament. In a unique twist, the lives of these two men follow a similar path, which leads to extraordinary experiences.
The author's medical expertise, as well as her research of St. Luke's ministry, lends an air of authenticity to the novel. Appropriate dialogue brings the cast of characters to life, providing them with a purpose that propels the story. Numerous flashbacks explain the significance of certain situations, but these moments may be a bit confusing at times. Although several subplots try to steer the story in different directions, the diligent reader will be rewarded with a compelling conclusion.
The genuine passion of Christians is shown in present-day and practical ways, which is a tribute to the author. An element of time adds a layer to the novel, as Dr. Tayspill connects to his family's past, which allows him to plan his future. There is a smooth flow from such diverse settings and people as the casualties of war torn Sierra Leone to the Quakers of the 19th century. This blending of time and cultures beautifully highlights the steadfastness of the Gospel message. Throughout the pages, the author has woven a thread of mystery surrounding a hidden manuscript. This is all tied together at the end for a satisfying and spiritually uplifting conclusion.
