AnnaBelle Blue comes from a long line of vampire hunters. When her uncle and well-known vampire hunter, Fauster, asks her to visit him in New York to assist with his research, AnnaBelle is eager to help. Taking the red-eye from her home in Paris, she is disconcerted by her uncle's bizarre behavior upon her arrival. He thrusts a camera and some film into her hands, and tells her that she's to attend a lecture at the local University.
Iain Dampier is a history professor. One of his most popular classes deals with "Vampire Myths and Legends", or more specifically, the fact that vampires do not exist. Iain believes that humans rarely see what's right in front of them, and he enjoys teaching a class that denies his very existence. During one of his typical lectures, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to a beautiful woman in the front row. She disappears before he can learn her name, but he vows to find out more about her.
Unsettled by her attraction to the handsome professor, AnnaBelle decides to get to know him better, even though she knows her stay in New York will be a short one. When her uncle disappears, however, she turns to Iain for help tracking him down. But Iain has secrets of his own. Can a vampire his real identity, and his heart, safe from a woman who has spent her life training as a vampire hunter?
Mlyn Hurn weaves an intense tale of passion, mystery, and family secrets. The reader feels for AnnaBelle as she discovers that her uncle's affairs in New York aren't quite what she expected them to be. Sometimes, people we've known our entire lives prove to be completely different individuals than we thought while growing up. It's a hard lesson to learn, but AnnaBelle deals with this knowledge in her usual down-to-earth and practical manner.
The pages sizzle as Iain and AnnaBelle get to know one another. Through their exploration of each other, the reader learns more about their feelings, desires and hope for the future. This reviewer wishes that some of the concepts introduced in the book were explained further, such as Iain's ability to obtain nourishment through psychic draining. However, the unanswered questions only help to provide readers with yet another reason to look forward to Mlyn Hurn's sequel to Blood Dreams, entitled Blood Dreams II: Hunter's Legacy, and a third novel meant to complete the trilogy.
