Dark nights and fierce thunderstorms. Old legends of creatures that feed on the blood of the living. Yes, I am talking about vampires, those immortal beings that only come out at night. The only way to kill them is by driving a wooden stake through their hearts. Such are the tales saved for books and old movies.
That is until Denver Detective Bryson Coventry is faced with a murder whose victim has a wooden stake driven through their heart. The Detective has no leads until he finds out that the exact same type of murder took place in Paris not too long before his victim was found in Denver. Now Coventry feels like he is getting somewhere. Then one of his old high school friends – who is a t.v. journalist – is kidnapped. And he is the prime suspect in her disappearance.
Then there is Heather Vaughn. Vampires have stepped out of legend and into her life. One stormy night, an intoxicatingly beautiful woman named London tells Heather that she is part of a vampire blood-line, and that vampire “slayers" are after her. Heather really isn’t sure she believes this, until not long after meeting London, she is attacked in her own home and forced to kill one of the slayers. Now Heather realizes she has a target on her back, and she must immerse herself into the world of vampires to save her life.
This is the first time that Jim Michael Hansen has written one of his “Laws" books where one of the main characters was not a lawyer. I think Mr. Hanson did a great job on his sixth novel. (Even making an Alfred Hitchcock-like cameo within its pages.) This story was captivating, erotic and humorous at times. I find a great adventure each time I delve into the world of Detective Bryson Coventry.
Again in this story, all-around-good-guy Coventry does the two things he does best: solve cases and become involved with some intoxicatingly beautiful woman. Little does he know that this time the woman he falls in love with is the vampire trying to help Heather, and that is London.
As with all of the other “Laws" books, I intended on reading a few chapters at a time. And again I failed; I was up all night. I am never sure if I should be mad at the author for keeping me up so late, or happy that I am being provided with such a great crime thriller. Either way, I loved this novel and can’t wait for the next.

Each time I get into one of Jim Michael Hansen's books, I feel like I am putting on my old comfortable pair of tennis shoes. The only difference is that my shoes go where I want to go. With the "Bryson Coventry Thrillers," I am never sure where my journey will end.
Bryson Conventry, head of the Denver Homicide Division, is confronted with a killing that should seem cut and dried. A guy stabbed in his bedroom. Bryson figures it should be pretty easy. Instead, it ends up intersecting him with two very interesting women.
The first is Paige Alexander. She is a newly licensed lawyer who is currently working as a waitress. The Denver legal market is turning out to be a bit harder to crack than she thought it would be. But Paige's luck is about to change when she meets the second woman, Ja'Von Deveraux. A beautiful private investigator from San Francisco. Ja'Von wants to hire Paige to help her go after the largest law firm in the city. This law firm had sent the P.I. to Bangkok to do surveillance. Instead, Ja'Von ended up being forced into the sex slave trade. And Ja'Von is sure the firm had something to do with it.
To complicate matters, Bryson is finding himself falling for Ja'Von. The beautiful P.I. is falling for Bryson also, but does not want to tell him the real reason why she is in the city.
Avid readers have their favorite authors and this one has become one of mine. The style of each book is the same, but the plot twists and turns are uniquely different from one another. This is the fifth book in the series and the luster is still there.
Bryson Conventry is just as interesting now as he was in "Night Laws" - Hansen's first book. Especially the women he meets. They just seem to get more beautiful with each new story. The characters that surround Bryson have not lost their luster either. They all come off the pages as living, breathing people.
The best part of Hansen's writing is that I get dropped into the depths of the story within two or three pages. As with most of the series, I started and finished this book in one sitting.
I whole-heartedly recommend reading "Bangkok Laws." It is great, whether or not a person has read the other "Laws" books.
