Dave Earley, the founding pastor of New Life Church in Columbus, Ohio, has written a Christian Living book filled with the two things I enjoy most in this type of work: passion and focus. There a lot of Christian authors out there writing books about how great your life can be living as a Christian, and I have read many of them. Some are good. Some are so-so. Some I wouldn't recommend to an atheist. Earley's book has the same message, talking about how great your life can be living as a Christian, but it is his passion and focus that sets this book apart from the others crowding the bookstore shelves.

Living in His Presence, The Immanuel Factor, is broken down into fifteen, taut, easy-to-read, easy-to-understand chapters. Each chapter is filled with Biblical insight, some commentary, life application, and a slice-of-life vignette. This combination makes the segments more personal and impacting.

The all-encompassing theme is consistent and pointed. Don't expect God to be there for you when you need Him, unless you surrender your life to Him. It only makes sense. The book explains that to get closer to God you have to have a "healthy detachment from the world." Put God first in all things, in all aspects of your life. Earley explains "If we hope to reflect the personality and mindset of Jesus we must spend time with Him."

The book focuses on the fact that learning about God is important, but that developing an actual relationship is even more crucial.

In addition to putting God first, the book explains that action is required, essential, on the part of the believer. Earley quotes Erwin McManus, stating, "I am convinced that the great tragedy is not the sins that we commit, but the life that we fail to live. You cannot follow God in neutral. God created you to do something" (Emphasis mine).

Earley states, "He (Jesus) did not pledge His presence (through the Holy Spirit) unless we are proclaiming His Word and raising up disciples. He promised to go with us as we go for Him." A profound and accurate reality.

Living in His Presence, The Immanuel Factor, is a must read if you are a seasoned Christian, new to the faith, or a spiritual seeker. Earley knows how to constructively share his beliefs in a way that is clear and concise, helpful and insightful. What more can I say? I loved the book.
