A Sounding Brass rings with reality! Author Shelley Bates sensitively captures a myriad of emotions among the main characters, making this book a powerful testimony of Christian truths!
Claire Montoya's world was very small, revolving around the principles and tenets of the Elect. She hadn't been encouraged to think on her own; in fact the Elders made every important decision for her. There were rules concerning what style of clothing is appropriate, how far she could travel, and even the type of man she could marry. Everything was written in black and white, and nothing could be questioned. But when her pastor was convicted of rape, and a charismatic evangelist shows up at their meeting, Claire knew that her small world was about to be rocked to its foundation.
The author is to be applauded for the insightful portrayal of main character, Claire Montoya. Readers will practically feel the fear and uncertainty that surrounded this young woman's life. As a member of the Elect, she was bound by their rules, but recent changes in the assembly were disturbing. These pages chronicle the beginnings of her doubts, and her gradual, yet hesitant, searching for the truth. Her life opens up with the delicacy and beauty of a flower unfurling, making this novel a joy to read.
A gentle romance adds the perfect touch of tenderness and love, which is subtly contrasted by a difficult police investigation. As all the pieces of the puzzle are put into place, readers will see beyond the events of the actual story, to the higher plane of truth and justice. The author carefully highlights spiritual insights in a creative and non-threatening way.
A Sounding Brass is a clarion call to love!
